Description
A figurative study by Max Weber depicting three nude women in a domestic interior. The work uses heavy forms and earth tones to create a sense of sculptural weight.
Max Weber painted Tranquility during a period when his work moved toward a more figurative and classical approach. Born in Russia and moving to New York as a child, Weber later studied in Paris where he became part of the avant-garde circle. After his earlier involvement with Cubism and Fauvism, he began to explore the weight and volume of the human form in a more representational manner. This painting depicts three nude women in a domestic setting. The composition relies on heavy, sculptural figures that occupy the space with a sense of physical presence. Weber uses a palette of earth tones, including ochre and sienna with muted blues, to define the scene.
The arrangement of the figures suggests a quiet, interior moment. One woman reclines on a draped bed, her arm resting behind her head in a pose reminiscent of classical sculpture. To the left, a standing figure looks toward the centre of the room. A third woman sits on a low wooden block in the foreground, her head tilted upwards. A small three-legged table holds a blue pitcher and fruit, adding a still-life element to the scene. The brushwork is visible and textured, contributing to the solid appearance of the subjects. The white drapery of the bed provides a bright contrast against the darker, shadowed areas of the room.
Weber's style here shows the influence of Paul Cézanne and the later works of Pablo Picasso. The distorted proportions and large limbs emphasise the mass of the bodies rather than anatomical precision. This technique creates a feeling of stability and permanence. The background is simplified into broad planes of colour, which keeps the attention on the interaction between the figures and their environment. The use of heavy outlines around the figures further defines their shapes against the flat background. This work represents American Modernism's engagement with traditional subjects through a modern lens.
