A nineteenth-century Belgian woodcut depicting the human life cycle as a staircase, featuring allegorical figures and moralising text.
This print, titled Trap des ouderdoms, is a classic example of nineteenth-century popular imagery produced by the Belgian firm Glenisson & Zonen. The work depicts the human life cycle as a staircase, a common allegorical motif in European folk art. The composition follows a symmetrical path, beginning at the base on the left with infancy and childhood, ascending through the stages of adulthood, and descending on the right towards old age and death.
At the apex of the staircase stands a figure representing the age of fifty. The central arch beneath the stairs features a personification of Time, depicted as a winged figure with a scythe, reinforcing the transient nature of existence. The text included at the bottom provides moral instruction, urging the viewer to consider the passage of time and the importance of virtue throughout one's life. The visual style is characteristic of mass-produced broadsides of the period, featuring bold, simplified outlines and a limited palette of hand-applied colour. The figures are dressed in contemporary attire, which helps to date the print to the mid-nineteenth century. Such prints were often sold at markets or by travelling pedlars, serving as both decorative items and didactic tools for the general public. The stark, graphic quality of the woodcut technique ensures that the narrative remains clear and accessible, prioritising the symbolic message over anatomical precision or complex perspective. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the era, where moralising themes were frequently communicated through accessible, affordable printed media.
