A detailed etching by Ferdinand Kobell depicting a solitary traveller resting beneath trees in a rural setting.
Ferdinand Kobell, a German painter and etcher, produced this work during the late eighteenth century. His output is characterised by a focus on rural scenes, often incorporating small figures to provide a sense of scale and human presence within the natural world. This etching displays the technical precision typical of his graphic work, where he employs varied line weights to define the textures of foliage, the rough surfaces of timber structures, and the soft contours of the ground.
The composition centres on a solitary traveller resting beneath the canopy of two large trees. The artist uses cross-hatching and short, flicked lines to create depth and shadow, particularly in the dense foliage that dominates the upper portion of the frame. To the left, a small cottage is partially obscured by bushes, while a simpler structure appears in the distance on the right. The scene conveys a quiet, observational quality, reflecting the period interest in pastoral subjects and the depiction of everyday life in the countryside.
Kobell was part of a family of artists and spent much of his career in Mannheim and Munich. His etchings were widely collected during his lifetime, appreciated for their clarity and their adherence to the conventions of the era. This print captures the artist's ability to balance the organic forms of nature with the man-made elements of rural architecture. The paper retains the plate mark, which is characteristic of original intaglio printing processes. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the late eighteenth-century European art market, where small-scale, detailed prints were highly valued for private study and collection.
