This watercolour by Hilma af Klint, 'Tree of Knowledge No. 2, Series W', showcases the artist's pioneering approach to abstraction and her interest in spiritual and esoteric themes. The composition features overlapping circular forms and symbolic imagery in a muted colour palette.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She produced a body of work that predates the more widely known abstract compositions of artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian. Af Klint's art was deeply connected to her spiritual beliefs and her involvement with the Theosophical Society. She believed that she was acting as a medium, channeling higher powers to create her paintings. 'Tree of Knowledge No. 2, Series W' is a watercolour on paper. The composition features two large, overlapping circular forms, one above the other. The upper circle is divided into segments radiating from a central point, reminiscent of a tree's canopy. Within this upper section, there are small, stylised figures and symbols. The lower circle contains similar geometric divisions and abstract shapes. The colour palette is muted, with shades of brown, grey, and white dominating the composition. Touches of blue and yellow add subtle contrast. The overall effect is one of a symbolic representation of knowledge and spiritual growth, rendered in an abstract visual language.
