Yun Shouping, also known as Nantian, was a central figure in the orthodox tradition of Qing Dynasty painting. He is particularly recognised for his mastery of the 'boneless' (mogu) technique, a method of painting that eschews heavy ink outlines in favour of direct colour application. This approach allows for a soft, atmospheric quality that captures the delicate texture of flower petals and leaves.

In this composition, the tree peonies emerge from a muted, earthy background. The artist uses subtle gradations of pink, white, and pale violet to render the blossoms, creating a sense of volume and weight without relying on rigid structural lines. The leaves and stems are depicted with fluid, calligraphic brushwork that suggests growth and movement.
