Raoul Dufy painted this work during his brief but formative engagement with the aesthetic principles of Paul Cézanne. Following his initial period as a Fauvist, Dufy visited L'Estaque in 1908, a location famously frequented by Cézanne and Georges Braque. This composition reflects the shift toward a more structured, analytical approach to form that defined the early stages of Cubism.

The painting focuses on the geometric reduction of natural elements. The tree trunks are rendered as solid, cylindrical forms, while the foliage is simplified into interlocking planes of colour.
