A springtime orchard scene by Camille Pissarro, 'Trees in Bloom' captures the fleeting beauty of blossoming trees with delicate brushstrokes and a soft, harmonious colour palette typical of Impressionism.
Camille Pissarro, a central figure in Impressionism, painted 'Trees in Bloom' in 1889. Born in 1830, Pissarro helped establish the Impressionist movement and was the only artist to show in all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions from 1874 to 1886. He acted as a bridge between older and younger artists, including Monet and Cézanne. Pissarro's work often focused on rural and urban French life, particularly scenes of peasants working in fields and bustling cityscapes. He died in 1903. 'Trees in Bloom' depicts an orchard in springtime, likely painted en plein air. The composition features several trees in varying stages of bloom, their delicate white blossoms contrasting with the rough texture of their branches. The foreground shows figures working in the orchard, adding a sense of scale and human presence. Pissarro uses short, broken brushstrokes to capture the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere, a hallmark of Impressionist technique. The colour palette is dominated by soft blues, greens, and browns, creating a harmonious and tranquil scene. The sky is rendered with loose, feathery strokes, suggesting a bright, overcast day.
