A refined ink and wash study by Flemish artist Willem Jacob Herreyns, depicting a mourning woman with two children in a classical style.
This drawing by the Flemish artist Willem Jacob Herreyns displays the characteristic fluidity of his ink and wash studies. Herreyns, a central figure in the Antwerp art scene during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often produced works that balanced classical composition with a softer, more emotive approach to the human form. The scene depicts a woman in a state of mourning, accompanied by two children. Her posture, leaning against a pedestal, suggests a classical influence, while the loose application of wash provides a sense of volume and atmosphere.
The artist uses brown ink to define the contours of the figures, while the wash creates depth through shadow and light. The composition is structured around the verticality of the woman, with the children providing a secondary focus that grounds the emotional weight of the piece. Herreyns was known for his role as a teacher at the Antwerp Academy, and this work reflects the academic rigour of the period, combined with a personal, expressive touch. The drawing captures a moment of quiet grief, avoiding excessive theatricality in favour of a restrained, balanced presentation.
As a study, the work offers a view into the artist's process. The visible ink lines show the confidence of his hand, while the wash layers demonstrate his control over tone. This piece is representative of the transition from the late Baroque traditions of the Low Countries toward the more structured, refined aesthetic of the Neoclassical era. It remains a fine example of the draughtsmanship that defined the training and output of the Antwerp school during this period.
