Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was a French painter, decorative artist, and writer. He was an important figure in the Symbolist movement and a founding member of Les Nabis, a group of Post-Impressionist avant-garde artists who sought to synthesise art and life. Denis's work is characterised by its spiritual and decorative qualities, often exploring themes of religion, mythology, and domesticity. He was influenced by Paul Gauguin and the Pont-Aven School, as well as by early Italian Renaissance painting. This oil on canvas depicts Marthe Meurier, Denis's first wife, in a triple portrait. The three views of Marthe are arranged in a close grouping, each with a slightly different expression and angle. She is draped in a white cloth, which adds to the ethereal quality of the painting. The background features stylised trees and a sunset sky, rendered in soft, muted colours.
