A detailed 1891 design drawing by Karel Sluijterman featuring a ceremonial trowel and hammer adorned with the Amsterdam coat of arms.
This work by Karel Sluijterman, dated May 1891, depicts a ceremonial trowel and hammer. These objects were typically commissioned for the laying of foundation stones for public buildings or monuments. The drawing demonstrates the precision required for metalwork design, capturing the reflective surfaces of the silver or polished steel blades and heads against a deep red background.
Sluijterman, a Dutch designer and architect, was known for his attention to decorative detail and his ability to render objects with clarity. The trowel and hammer feature ornate handles, likely crafted from ivory or light-coloured wood, adorned with gold filigree and blue enamel accents. The coat of arms of Amsterdam, featuring the three crosses, is visible on both implements, indicating their civic purpose. The artist uses shadows to provide a sense of volume, lifting the objects from the flat surface of the paper.
The composition is formal and balanced, reflecting the conventions of late nineteenth-century design documentation. The inclusion of the date at the bottom of the sheet suggests this was a working drawing or a presentation piece for a client. The rendering of the crown motifs and the delicate scrollwork on the handles shows the influence of historical styles, which were common in Dutch decorative arts of the period. This print offers a view into the craftsmanship associated with civic ceremonies in the late Victorian era, where functional tools were elevated to objects of art through material choice and ornamental design. The clarity of the lines and the controlled application of colour make this an excellent example of professional design practice at the end of the nineteenth century.
