A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Reinier Nooms depicting a walled garden and waterway on the outskirts of Paris.
This etching by Reinier Nooms, also known as Zeeman, captures a quiet scene on the outskirts of Paris during the mid-seventeenth century. Nooms, a Dutch artist with a background as a sailor, possessed a keen eye for the structural details of architecture and the natural environment. The composition focuses on a walled garden bordering a waterway, with stone arches providing access to the water. The artist employs precise, controlled lines to define the texture of the masonry and the dense foliage of the trees above the wall. A lone figure on horseback traverses the water, providing a sense of scale and daily activity within the scene.
Nooms travelled extensively throughout Europe, and his prints often documented the urban and maritime environments he encountered. His work is characterised by a technical clarity that appealed to contemporary collectors interested in topography and travel. The etching demonstrates his ability to balance the rigid geometry of man-made structures with the organic forms of the surrounding trees. The sky remains relatively clear, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the stone surfaces and the water. This print reflects the Dutch interest in documenting foreign locales through the medium of etching, a practice that allowed for the wide distribution of such views across Europe. The work remains a precise record of a specific location, capturing the character of the Parisian periphery before the urban expansion of later centuries.
