This watercolour by August Macke (1887-1914), a German Expressionist painter, depicts a North African scene. Macke was a leading member of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). His work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in capturing the effects of light. He was killed in action during World War I at the age of 27. The painting shows a view of a garden or park in Tunis, with trees, flowers, and a building in the background. Two figures, presumably Arabs, are seated in the foreground. The composition is divided into distinct areas of colour, with blues and greens dominating the sky and foliage, and reds and yellows adding warmth to the architecture and ground. Macke's use of watercolour creates a sense of lightness and transparency, capturing the atmosphere of the North African light.
