This work by Jean-Michel Basquiat features a black background densely covered with white lines, symbols, and words, including a prominent crown motif. The artwork is divided into sections filled with text fragments, diagrams, and abstract figures.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat's art emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the late 1970s, evolving into an internationally exhibited painter by the 1980s. His work often combined graffiti-like imagery with poetic, sometimes cryptic, text. Basquiat's style is characterised by its raw, energetic, and seemingly spontaneous execution. He died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27. 'Tuxedo' exemplifies Basquiat's distinctive style. The composition features a black background densely covered with white, seemingly scribbled lines, symbols, and words. A prominent crown motif sits at the top, a recurring symbol in Basquiat's work, often interpreted as a signifier of power, royalty, or self-identification. Below the crown, the artwork is divided into sections filled with a chaotic arrangement of text fragments, diagrams, and abstract figures. The overall impression is one of frenetic energy and complex layers of meaning, inviting viewers to decode the artist's personal iconography and social commentary.
