A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Audran, featuring two symmetrical candelabra designs in the French Baroque style.
This print displays two vertical panels featuring symmetrical candelabra designs, a form popularised during the French Baroque period. Gérard Audran, a member of a prominent family of engravers, produced this work to provide decorative templates for artisans, architects, and interior designers of the seventeenth century. The composition follows the tradition of grotesque ornament, where classical motifs, human figures, and vegetal forms merge into a unified structure.
The left panel features a central female figure flanked by putti, supported by a base of acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage. The right panel presents a more architectural arrangement, incorporating a central medallion, draped swags, and figures acting as caryatids. The precision of the line work demonstrates the technical mastery required for copperplate engraving, allowing for the fine detail seen in the drapery, the facial expressions of the figures, and the delicate shading of the ornamental elements.
Such designs were frequently used as models for furniture, metalwork, and wall decorations in royal and aristocratic residences. The symmetry and balance of the panels reflect the formal aesthetic preferences of the era, prioritising order and classical proportion. By isolating these motifs from their functional context, the print allows for a closer examination of the draughtsmanship and the imaginative synthesis of classical antiquity with contemporary decorative trends. The work remains a clear example of the dissemination of ornamental styles through printed media, which allowed specific design vocabularies to spread across Europe during the late seventeenth century. The paper shows the characteristic plate mark of an intaglio print, confirming its status as a professional production intended for circulation among the artistic community of the time.
