A sixteenth-century Dutch woodcut depicting a biblical scene of trumpeters calling a community to assembly before a classical archway.
This woodcut by Pieter Jacobsz. Paets depicts a scene from the Old Testament, specifically the instruction to use silver trumpets to assemble the congregation. The composition is structured around a central architectural archway, which frames a series of conical tents in the background. This use of a classical archway reflects the influence of Renaissance architectural motifs on Northern European printmaking during the sixteenth century.
In the foreground, two figures play long, curved trumpets, their bodies captured in mid-stride. To the left, a bearded figure, likely representing a priest or leader, gestures towards the tents while holding a staff. The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of woodcut production from this period. The hatching and cross-hatching techniques provide volume to the drapery of the figures and the stone texture of the archway, while the overall approach remains focused on narrative clarity rather than atmospheric depth.
Pieter Jacobsz. Paets was a Dutch printmaker whose work often appeared in religious texts and bibles of the era. These illustrations served to visualise complex theological narratives for a wider audience. The print demonstrates the technical constraints and stylistic conventions of the woodcut medium, where every line must be carved in relief. The artist manages to convey a sense of movement and purpose through the positioning of the figures, despite the inherent rigidity of the medium. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Renaissance, where biblical stories were translated into accessible, graphic forms. The work is a fine example of the period's dedication to didactic art, where the primary goal is the communication of a specific scriptural event through balanced, readable imagery.
