A quiet, atmospheric study of a pond and woodland at dusk, painted by Russian Symbolist Konstantin Somov in 1897.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, painted Twilight in the Old Park in 1897. This work captures a quiet, reflective atmosphere characteristic of his early period. The composition features a still pond reflecting the darkening sky, bordered by dense, mature trees that recede into the background. Two small, indistinct figures sit upon a bench, their presence adding a sense of scale and human isolation to the scene.
Somov employs a muted palette dominated by various shades of green, ranging from deep forest tones to lighter, grassy hues. The light suggests the transition between day and evening, where shadows lengthen and details soften. Unlike the more dramatic or theatrical works he produced later in his career, this piece focuses on the observation of nature and the mood of a specific time of day. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for a smooth transition between the water surface and the surrounding foliage.
As a member of the Russian Symbolist movement, Somov often explored themes of nostalgia and the past. This park setting, reminiscent of 18th-century aristocratic estates, functions as a stage for quiet contemplation. The stillness of the water and the enclosed nature of the trees create a sense of withdrawal from the modern world. The painting demonstrates his technical ability to manage light and shadow, creating a cohesive environment that feels both grounded in reality and slightly detached from it. It remains a representative example of his interest in the quiet, often melancholic beauty found in neglected or forgotten spaces.
