Kikuchi Yōsai, a painter active during the late Edo and early Meiji periods, is recognised for his mastery of historical subjects and his technical precision in ink wash painting. This work, depicting two carp, demonstrates the artist's ability to capture movement and atmosphere through subtle tonal variations. The composition relies on the interplay between the solid forms of the fish and the negative space of the water, rendered in soft, muted washes of ink.

The carp are positioned to suggest a gentle, fluid motion, with one fish appearing closer to the surface and the other partially obscured by the murky depths.
