A satirical sixteenth-century engraving by Sebald Beham depicting two couples, capturing a moment of social observation through precise, detailed line work.
This engraving by Sebald Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, depicts two pairs of figures in a satirical, narrative style. Beham was a prolific printmaker in Nuremberg, and his work often focused on the daily lives, vices, and social customs of the sixteenth-century German population. The print features two distinct couples: on the left, a man and woman walk in a composed manner, while on the right, a man, identified as 'Nicolavs Cristmon', is shown in a state of physical distress, vomiting while his companion supports him. The inclusion of names and numbers above the figures suggests this is part of a larger series, likely a commentary on moral conduct or a humorous observation of human frailty.
Beham employs a precise, controlled line quality characteristic of the German Renaissance engraving tradition. The figures are rendered with clear outlines and subtle cross-hatching to define the folds of their period clothing and the texture of the ground. The composition is balanced, with the two groups separated by the artist's monogram, 'ISB'. The scene avoids excessive background detail, keeping the focus entirely on the physical actions and expressions of the subjects. This work provides a glimpse into the graphic arts of the period, where printmakers used their medium to document both the mundane and the grotesque aspects of life. The print is a fine example of the technical skill required for small-scale copperplate engraving, demonstrating the artist's ability to convey movement and character within a compact format.
