A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Kikumaro, featuring two court ladies in traditional attire, rendered with delicate lines and a soft, muted palette.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Kikumaro depicts two figures in traditional court attire. Kikumaro was a student of the famous Kitagawa Utamaro, and his work often mirrors the stylistic focus on feminine grace and refined posture common in the Ukiyo-e school of the Edo period. The composition is balanced, with the two women positioned before a folding screen, which provides a subtle geometric contrast to the flowing lines of their layered robes.
The figures are rendered with delicate, thin lines that define the contours of their garments and the specific styling of their hair. Their expressions are composed and serene, typical of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochre, muted red, and white, which allows the viewer to focus on the textures of the fabric and the calligraphic quality of the ink. The inclusion of Japanese script to the left of the figures adds a vertical element that anchors the composition, balancing the visual weight of the screen on the right.
Kikumaro’s approach to the human form is stylised rather than strictly realistic, prioritising the elegance of the silhouette. The folding screen in the background features a pattern that suggests natural forms, providing a sense of interior space without the use of complex perspective. This print is a fine example of the technical precision achieved by Japanese printmakers during the early 19th century, where the interaction between negative space and printed detail creates a sense of quietude. The work remains a clear representation of the aesthetic values of the period, focusing on the harmony of form and the subtle interplay of colour and line.
