Description

A 1645 etching by Wenceslaus Hollar, reproducing grotesque profile studies after Leonardo da Vinci with precise cross-hatched detail.

This etching by Wenceslaus Hollar, dated 1645, reproduces a series of grotesque studies originally attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. Hollar, a prolific Bohemian printmaker who spent much of his career in England, was highly regarded for his technical precision in reproducing the works of other masters. The composition presents two profiles in opposition, each exhibiting exaggerated facial features that depart from classical proportions. The figure on the left possesses a receding forehead, a prominent nose, and a protruding lower lip, while the figure on the right is defined by a sharp, angular chin and a tall, conical hat. Hollar employs fine, cross-hatched lines to model the volume of the faces and the texture of the clothing. The technique demonstrates his command of the etching needle, allowing for subtle gradations of shadow that define the contours of these unusual subjects. The inscription at the top of the plate explicitly credits Leonardo da Vinci as the inventor of the imagery, reflecting the seventeenth-century interest in the physiognomic studies associated with the Italian Renaissance. These grotesque heads were often collected as curiosities, serving as a study of human variety and the limits of facial anatomy. The print provides a clear example of how Hollar disseminated European art through his meticulous reproductive engravings, making such studies accessible to a wider audience of collectors and artists in the seventeenth century. The work remains a study in the intersection of observational drawing and the tradition of the grotesque, capturing the specific aesthetic interests of the period.
