A classic nishiki-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, depicting two women sharing an umbrella during a rain shower.
Suzuki Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single woodblock composition. This print depicts two women navigating a rain shower, a subject that allows the artist to demonstrate his mastery of atmospheric effects and delicate line work. The figures are rendered with the slender, ethereal proportions characteristic of Harunobu's work during the mid-Edo period.
The composition relies on a subtle balance between the figures and the architectural elements. One woman holds a large yellow umbrella, providing shelter for both as they walk past a wall. The rain is represented by thin, vertical lines that cut across the scene, creating a sense of movement and weather. The colour palette is restrained, using soft tones of pink, yellow, and muted greys to maintain a sense of harmony. The patterns on their kimonos are rendered with precision, showing the attention to detail that defined the ukiyo-e genre.
Harunobu often focused on the daily lives of women in Edo, capturing moments of quiet activity. This print avoids dramatic action, opting instead for a lyrical representation of a fleeting moment. The use of negative space and the simplified background ensure that the focus remains on the interaction between the two figures. As a fine art print, this piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of 18th-century Japan, where the depiction of beauty and seasonal change held a central place in the artistic output of the time. The print is a representative example of the technical advancements in colour printing that occurred under Harunobu's influence, moving away from the limited palettes of earlier eras.
