A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Flemish artist Jan Fyt, depicting two greyhounds tethered to a tree with precise, expressive line work.
This etching by Jan Fyt, a Flemish master of the seventeenth century, captures two greyhounds tethered to a tree. Fyt was widely recognised for his skill in depicting animals, a genre he elevated through his keen observation of anatomy and texture. The composition focuses on the physical tension of the dogs, their bodies twisted as they pull against their leads. The artist employs a confident, calligraphic line to define the musculature of the animals and the rough bark of the tree, creating a sense of movement within a static scene.
The background remains sparse, suggesting an open, windswept field that directs the viewer's attention to the subjects. Fyt’s technique in this print demonstrates his ability to convey the tactile quality of fur and the lean, athletic build of the hounds. The etching process allows for a crispness in the line work that brings a sense of immediacy to the study. Unlike his larger oil paintings, which often feature complex still-life arrangements, this work relies on a minimalist approach to isolate the character of the dogs.
Jan Fyt was a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke and spent time in Italy, where he absorbed influences that informed his approach to light and form. His prints were circulated widely, contributing to the popularity of animal subjects in European art. This piece is a fine example of his technical proficiency and his focus on the natural world. The work is signed and dated in the lower left, providing a clear record of its creation during the height of his career. It remains a study of form and animal behaviour, presented with the precision characteristic of the period.
