A study of two horses rendered in traditional ink and wash, capturing the fluid movement and anatomical precision characteristic of Xu Beihong.
Xu Beihong is widely recognised for his mastery of the horse as a subject, a motif he utilised to express national spirit and resilience. This work displays his characteristic approach: the synthesis of traditional Chinese brushwork with Western anatomical observation. By applying the fluid, expressive qualities of ink wash, he captures the physical weight and muscular tension of the animals while maintaining a sense of movement.
The composition focuses on two horses in a grazing posture. The artist uses varying ink tones to define the musculature and coat patterns, creating a sense of volume without relying on heavy outlines. The ink is applied with a calligraphic sensibility, where the pressure and speed of the brush dictate the texture of the manes and the solidity of the legs. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the interaction between the two figures and the subtle variations in their markings.
Xu Beihong studied in Paris during the 1920s, an experience that informed his rigorous approach to drawing. Upon his return to China, he sought to modernise traditional painting techniques by incorporating Western principles of light, shadow, and perspective. This piece reflects that period of transition, where the economy of the ink medium meets a keen interest in naturalistic representation. The horses are not merely decorative; they possess a distinct presence, rendered with a confidence that reflects the artist's lifelong study of equine anatomy. The work remains a clear example of his ability to bridge disparate artistic traditions through a singular, focused subject.
