This piece is a fragment from the Ōe-gire, a collection of poems attributed to the Heian period courtier and poet Fujiwara no Sadayori. The work displays the kana script, a syllabary developed in Japan that allowed for the fluid expression of the vernacular language. The characters are written with a brush, showing variations in pressure and speed that create a rhythmic flow across the paper. The text itself concerns the social dynamics and gossip within the imperial palace, a common subject for the aristocratic poets of the time.
