A mezzotint print by Wallerant Vaillant, 'Two Singing Boys' depicts two young boys singing from a book, one playing a lute. The print captures a moment of youthful exuberance and musical harmony.
Wallerant Vaillant (1623-1677) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker. He is known for being one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique, and is considered one of its greatest early masters. Vaillant was born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam around 1643. He travelled extensively, working in Germany and France, before settling in Amsterdam in 1658. He primarily painted portraits, but also produced genre scenes and religious works. 'Two Singing Boys' is a mezzotint print depicting two young boys singing from a book, one playing a lute. The composition is simple, with the figures close together in a shallow space. The light is soft and diffused, creating a sense of intimacy. Vaillant's skill with the mezzotint technique is evident in the subtle gradations of tone and the delicate details of the figures' faces and clothing. The print captures a moment of youthful exuberance and musical harmony.
