A fine etching and aquatint by Conrad Martin Metz, reproducing two studies of the Madonna and Child after the Italian master Parmigianino.
This print by Conrad Martin Metz presents two distinct studies of the Madonna and Child, based on the work of the Italian Mannerist painter Parmigianino. Metz, a German printmaker who spent much of his career in London, gained recognition for his technical ability to replicate the nuances of Old Master drawings through etching and aquatint. These reproductions were intended to make the aesthetic qualities of Renaissance sketches accessible to a wider audience of collectors and students.
The upper study captures a seated Madonna with the infant Christ, rendered with delicate, flowing lines that suggest the original chalk or ink medium. The lower study offers a more substantial, tonal interpretation, employing aquatint to create soft shadows and volume within the drapery and the figures. The composition reflects the elongated, graceful proportions characteristic of Parmigianino, which Metz has carefully preserved in his translation from paper to copper plate.
Metz often included inscriptions beneath his prints, noting the provenance of the original drawings. The text below the lower image identifies the source as a study for the Madonna del Collo Lungo, a work held in Florence, with a reference to a version in the Palazzo Marchese Gentili in Rome. By documenting these details, Metz provided historical context for the viewer, transforming his prints into educational tools for the study of art history. The monochromatic palette and the focus on line and form demonstrate the technical rigour of late eighteenth-century printmaking. This piece offers a glimpse into the methods used by artists of the period to document and circulate the styles of their predecessors, maintaining a focus on the draftsmanship and compositional balance of the Italian Renaissance.
