A detailed study of two white butterflies amidst tall, textured grasses, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889.
Painted in May 1889 during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work captures a quiet moment in the garden. Vincent van Gogh focuses on the immediate surroundings, turning his attention to the tall grasses and the small insects inhabiting them. The composition is dominated by vertical and diagonal brushstrokes that suggest the movement of blades of grass swaying in the breeze. The palette consists primarily of various shades of green, ranging from deep olive to lighter, yellowish tones, which provide a sense of depth and texture to the dense vegetation.
The two white butterflies are positioned in the upper left, their pale forms contrasting with the darker, earthy tones of the foliage. Van Gogh applies paint with his characteristic energy, using thick, rhythmic strokes that define the structure of the plants. This approach creates a sense of vitality within the scene, despite the relatively small scale of the subject matter. The work reflects his interest in the natural world, often observed during his walks within the hospital grounds.
Unlike his more expansive views of the countryside, this piece functions as a close-up study. It demonstrates his ability to find interest in the mundane aspects of nature. The paint application is deliberate, with the texture of the canvas occasionally visible beneath the layers of oil. The work remains a clear example of his late style, where colour and brushwork are used to convey the essence of the subject rather than a precise, photographic representation. The focus on the interaction between the butterflies and the grass creates a balanced, self-contained scene that invites close inspection of the artist's technique.
