Description
Twywell Gullet holds a turquoise pool below pale limestone, while trees line the rim of this former quarry and sharpen its calm, luminous, distinctive enclosure.
Cream rock rises in broad shelves above clear water, its vertical faces broken by ledges, shadows and small tufts of growth. A band of trees gathers along the rim, adding a deep green edge to the exposed stone. The basin at Twywell Gullet feels enclosed yet luminous, with the pool reflecting the brightness of the cliff and sky.
Visitors who know Twywell Gullet may recognise the sudden change of scale on entering its reserve: a sheltered hollow, water underfoot and steep walls close by. The image holds that contrast between the industrially shaped ground and the patient return of vegetation around it.
