Thomas Girtin, a contemporary and rival of J.M.W. Turner, transformed the practice of British watercolour painting during his short career. This work depicts the coastal town of Tynemouth, Northumberland, capturing the ruins of the priory perched upon the headland. Girtin moved away from the tinted drawing style common in the eighteenth century, opting instead for a broader, more atmospheric approach to light and shadow. The composition is defined by a low horizon line, which allows the expansive sky to dominate the scene. Girtin employs a restrained palette of ochres, greys, and muted greens to convey the damp, coastal air of the North East.
