A study of traditional regional costume from the Roncal Valley, captured with the expressive brushwork and light-focused technique of Joaquín Sorolla.
This work is a study of regional costume from the Roncal Valley in Navarre, Spain. Joaquín Sorolla painted this piece as part of his commission for the Hispanic Society of America, titled 'Vision of Spain'. The series required the artist to travel across the Iberian Peninsula to document the diverse traditions and clothing of various provinces.
In this composition, Sorolla focuses on three figures. A man stands with his back to the viewer, wearing a traditional black jacket with a white collar, while two women face forward. The woman on the left wears a striking red and white head covering, which contrasts with the dark, sombre attire of the woman beside her. Sorolla uses his characteristic brushwork to capture the texture of the heavy fabrics and the specific quality of light hitting the figures. The background suggests a mountainous region, rendered with loose, gestural strokes that provide a sense of place without distracting from the subjects.
Sorolla was known for his ability to capture the immediacy of a scene. His approach here is observational, documenting the specific silhouettes and materials of the Roncal attire. The palette is dominated by deep blacks and stark whites, punctuated by the bold red of the woman's headpiece. This work demonstrates his interest in ethnographic detail, which he balanced with his painterly technique. The figures appear caught in a moment of quiet interaction, their poses natural and unforced. By focusing on the specificities of regional dress, Sorolla created a visual record of a culture that was already beginning to change during the early twentieth century. The painting remains a clear example of his late-career focus on Spanish identity and his mastery of light and shadow in a figurative context.
