A woodcut print by Dutch artist Julie de Graag, 'Uil' (Owl) features bold lines and a simplified form, characteristic of her unique modernist style.
Julie de Graag (1877-1924) was a Dutch artist known for her simplified, almost abstracted, woodcut prints of animals and plants. Her style reflects influences from both Japanese woodblock prints and the Dutch modernist movement. De Graag's work often features a limited colour palette and strong, clear lines. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and later became part of the artists' circle in Laren, Netherlands. Her career was cut short by her early death at the age of 47. This print, titled 'Uil' (Owl), exemplifies de Graag's distinctive approach. The owl is rendered with bold, dark lines that define its form against a pale background. The composition is simple, focusing attention on the essential characteristics of the bird. The background includes a faint suggestion of foliage, adding a subtle decorative element without detracting from the central subject. The print's graphic quality and stylised representation of the owl are typical of de Graag's unique aesthetic.
