A refined Art Nouveau lithograph by Theo van Hoytema, featuring symmetrical bird motifs framing an exhibition invitation for furniture by Van Wyngaarden & Co.
This lithographic invitation card, designed by the Dutch artist Theo van Hoytema, reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the turn of the century. Van Hoytema was a prominent figure in the Dutch Art Nouveau movement, known for his keen observation of nature and his mastery of lithography. The composition features two birds, likely pheasants, positioned symmetrically at the top of the frame. Their long, patterned tail feathers curve downwards to enclose the central text, creating a balanced and decorative frame for the announcement.
The typography is integrated into the design, echoing the fluid, organic lines characteristic of the period. The text informs the recipient of an exhibition of furniture produced by the firm Van Wyngaarden & Co. in Weesp, with decorative elements provided by Van Hoytema himself. The event took place at the Pulchri Studio in The Hague.
Van Hoytema often drew inspiration from the natural world, particularly birds and animals, which he rendered with a distinct combination of stylised form and anatomical accuracy. His work frequently appeared in books, calendars, and promotional materials, demonstrating his ability to apply fine art techniques to commercial graphic design. The monochromatic palette and the clean, deliberate line work demonstrate the artist's technical precision. This piece provides a clear example of how commercial ephemera of the era functioned as a vehicle for artistic expression, merging utility with a refined decorative style. The print captures the intersection of craft and industry that defined the period, offering a glimpse into the collaborative efforts between designers and manufacturers in the early twentieth century.
