A haunting lithograph by Odilon Redon, depicting a solitary figure in a desolate landscape, originally created for the 1888 series 'À Gustave Flaubert'.
This lithograph, titled 'Un fou, dans un morne paysage', is part of the series 'À Gustave Flaubert', published in 1888. Odilon Redon, a French Symbolist artist, produced this work as a response to the literary themes found in Flaubert's 'The Temptation of Saint Anthony'. The print demonstrates Redon's mastery of the lithographic medium, utilising a range of grey tones to create an atmosphere of psychological isolation.
The composition features a solitary figure standing before a massive, hollowed tree trunk. The figure, identified as a madman, appears small and vulnerable against the stark, barren terrain. Redon employs a sparse, almost desolate setting to focus the viewer's attention on the internal state of the subject. The lines are delicate yet precise, capturing the texture of the bark and the subtle shadows cast upon the ground. The lack of excessive detail allows the viewer to project their own interpretation onto the scene, a common trait in Redon's 'noirs' series.
Lemercier & Cie., the renowned Parisian printing firm, was responsible for the technical execution of this edition. Their collaboration with Redon ensured that the subtle gradations of the original charcoal drawings were preserved in the printed form. The work reflects the artist's interest in the subconscious and the dreamlike states that defined his career. By stripping away unnecessary elements, Redon creates a visual experience that is both quiet and unsettling. This print offers a glimpse into the late nineteenth-century fascination with the darker aspects of the human psyche, presented through a refined and minimalist aesthetic.
