This work by Alberto Burri reflects the post-war European movement known as Art Informel. Burri, a physician by training, turned to painting during his time as a prisoner of war in Texas. His approach to the canvas is marked by a rejection of traditional geometric abstraction, favouring instead a focus on the physical properties of materials and the raw application of pigment. The composition is structured through a series of interlocking, rectangular blocks of colour. The palette is dominated by deep blues, ochres, and blacks, punctuated by sharp, saturated reds. The paint application varies in density, creating a surface that feels tactile and weathered. Unlike the precise lines of earlier modernist movements, the edges here are soft and permeable, allowing colours to bleed into one another.
