Description
A mid-century abstract composition by Alberto Burri, featuring a grid of saturated colours and textured paint application typical of the Art Informel movement.
This work by Alberto Burri reflects the post-war European movement known as Art Informel. Burri, a physician by training, turned to painting during his time as a prisoner of war in Texas. His approach to the canvas is marked by a rejection of traditional geometric abstraction, favouring instead a focus on the physical properties of materials and the raw application of pigment. The composition is structured through a series of interlocking, rectangular blocks of colour. The palette is dominated by deep blues, ochres, and blacks, punctuated by sharp, saturated reds. The paint application varies in density, creating a surface that feels tactile and weathered. Unlike the precise lines of earlier modernist movements, the edges here are soft and permeable, allowing colours to bleed into one another. This technique creates a sense of depth that is not derived from perspective, but from the layering of paint and the interplay of light and shadow across the surface. Burri was known for his interest in the degradation of materials. While this specific piece relies on oil paint, it anticipates his later work with burlap, plastic, and iron. The viewer is invited to observe the tension between the structured grid and the organic, almost decaying quality of the paint application. It is a study in balance, where the heavy, dark forms anchor the lighter, more fluid sections of the composition. The work avoids narrative or symbolic representation, focusing entirely on the visual weight and emotional resonance of colour and form. It remains a representative example of the mid-century shift toward a more visceral, material-based approach to abstract painting in Italy.
