A detailed architectural study of a South Indian temple pillar, featuring the iconography of Shiva Ravananugrahamurti and traditional yali carvings.
This technical drawing documents the structural and decorative elements of a South Indian temple pillar. The composition focuses on the verticality of the stone support, rendered with precise line work that captures the specific iconography found in Dravidian architecture. The central figure depicted is Shiva in the Ravananugrahamurti form, a narrative scene where the deity remains composed while Ravana attempts to shake Mount Kailasa. This mythological subject is a common motif in temple sculpture, often positioned on the exterior pillars of mandapas or gopurams.
To the side of the central deity, the artist has included a female attendant holding a flywhisk, or chauri, a traditional symbol of royalty and divine service. The base of the pillar features a rearing yali, a mythical creature combining features of a lion, elephant, and horse. This creature is a standard protective element in temple design, intended to ward off malevolent forces. The drawing also details the complex mouldings, floral motifs, and smaller subsidiary figures that populate the capital and shaft of the pillar.
Such drawings were often produced during the colonial period by local draftsmen employed to record the architectural heritage of the Indian subcontinent. The draughtsmanship prioritises clarity and structural accuracy, allowing for the study of the proportions and the placement of sculptural elements within the larger temple complex. The absence of shading or colour emphasises the geometric rigour of the stone carving. This print offers a view into the systematic documentation of religious architecture, providing a clear record of the iconographic programmes that defined the visual culture of the region. It is a study of both engineering and theology, capturing the synthesis of form and function inherent in traditional temple construction.
