A classic example of Yves Klein's signature International Klein Blue, this monochrome work explores the power of pure colour and spatial depth.
Yves Klein, a central figure in post-war European art, developed a specific ultramarine pigment known as International Klein Blue (IKB). This work represents his pursuit of pure, immaterial space through the application of this singular colour. By removing traditional subject matter, perspective, and brushwork, Klein aimed to liberate the viewer from the constraints of figurative representation.
The surface of this piece is saturated with the synthetic resin-bound pigment, which retains a matte, velvety texture. This specific formulation ensures the colour remains consistent and intense, avoiding the reflective qualities of traditional oil paints. The uniformity of the blue surface invites a meditative engagement, where the colour itself becomes the primary object of perception.
Klein viewed his monochrome works as open windows to the infinite. He sought to create an environment where the viewer could experience the void, or the 'sensibility' of the colour. This approach moved away from the gestural abstraction common in the mid-twentieth century, favouring a controlled, conceptual application that prioritised the physical presence of the pigment. The work functions as a physical manifestation of his belief that art should transcend the material world to reach a state of pure sensation. By presenting a single, unmodulated field of colour, Klein forces an encounter with the absolute, stripping away narrative distractions to focus entirely on the optical and emotional impact of the blue hue.
