A striking example of Yves Klein's signature International Klein Blue, this monochrome work explores the power of pure colour and the void.
Yves Klein, a central figure in post-war European art, developed his signature pigment, International Klein Blue (IKB), in collaboration with a Parisian paint supplier. This work represents his pursuit of the void and the liberation of colour from the constraints of form. By suspending the ultramarine pigment in a synthetic resin binder, Klein achieved a matte, velvety finish that prevents the light from reflecting off the surface in a conventional manner. This technique allows the colour to appear as if it is floating, detached from the physical support of the canvas.
The application of the paint in this piece reveals the physical process of its creation. The drips and uneven edges at the base of the central block of colour provide a record of the artist's gesture. Unlike traditional painting, where the artist uses colour to describe a subject, Klein treats the colour itself as the subject. He sought to create an immersive experience, inviting the viewer to contemplate the infinite nature of the blue hue. This approach aligns with his broader interest in immateriality and the spiritual dimensions of art.
Klein's work often moved beyond the traditional gallery space, yet his monochrome canvases remain his most recognisable contribution to art history. By reducing the visual field to a single, saturated tone, he forces a direct encounter between the viewer and the medium. The absence of narrative or representational elements encourages a meditative state. This print captures the intensity of the original pigment, maintaining the balance between the rigid, rectangular form and the fluid, organic drips at the bottom. It is a study in the power of pure colour to occupy space and influence the perception of the surrounding environment.
