A fine example of Zen calligraphy by the Ōbaku monk Mu'an Xingtao, featuring fluid, expressive ink brushwork on paper.
This work by Mu'an Xingtao (1611-1684) represents the tradition of Zen calligraphy, a practice where the physical act of writing serves as a direct expression of the practitioner's state of mind. Mu'an, a Chinese monk who travelled to Japan to help establish the Ōbaku school of Zen Buddhism, brought with him a distinct style of brushwork that departed from the rigid conventions of his contemporaries. His characters possess a fluid, rhythmic quality, demonstrating a balance between controlled technique and spontaneous gesture.
The composition features bold, expressive ink strokes set against a neutral paper background. The variation in line weight, from thick, saturated marks to thin, trailing ends, indicates the speed and pressure applied by the artist during the creative process. Such works were often produced as gifts for disciples or as meditative exercises, intended to convey a specific teaching or philosophical sentiment through the visual rhythm of the script.
The scroll is mounted in a traditional format, featuring decorative silk borders that frame the central text. The presence of red seals, or hanko, provides both authentication and a visual counterpoint to the black ink. These seals are characteristic of the period and indicate the artist's identity and status within the monastic hierarchy. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Ōbaku sect, which favoured a synthesis of Ming dynasty Chinese artistic traditions and Japanese Zen sensibilities. By focusing on the movement of the brush, Mu'an invites the viewer to engage with the work as a temporal record of a singular moment of concentration. The clarity of the characters and the deliberate spacing across the paper surface create a sense of equilibrium, typical of high-quality examples of seventeenth-century Buddhist calligraphy.
