A detailed reproduction of a circular Coptic textile fragment, featuring a symmetrical medallion design typical of late antique Egyptian weaving.
This circular textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when weaving techniques reached a high level of technical sophistication. The piece displays a medallion design, a common motif in late antique textiles used to decorate tunics and other garments. The composition is symmetrical, featuring stylised figures or zoomorphic forms arranged within a circular border. The weave structure is visible, showing the interaction between the warp and weft threads that create the pattern.
Textiles from this era often served both functional and decorative purposes. The use of wool on a linen ground is characteristic of Egyptian weaving during the first millennium. The design reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, which favoured geometric order and repetitive motifs. Such fragments were frequently preserved in the arid climate of Egypt, allowing for the survival of these delicate materials. The circular form suggests it may have been an orbiculus, a decorative patch applied to the shoulder or knee area of a tunic. The monochromatic nature of the surviving fragment allows for a clear view of the structural composition and the skill of the weaver in manipulating threads to form coherent shapes. This print captures the texture and historical character of the original artefact, providing a view into the material culture of late antiquity.
