Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, developed his own approach to collage, which he termed Merz. This work, Untitled (D’Cily), created in 1942, demonstrates his method of repurposing discarded materials to construct new visual narratives. By assembling fragments of printed ephemera, tickets, and photographic clippings, Schwitters disrupts traditional modes of representation.

The composition is anchored by a central, abstract black and grey form that obscures the underlying imagery. Peering from behind this geometric block are human eyes, creating a tension between the hidden and the revealed. The surrounding elements include a small photographic portrait of a woman, text fragments, and a pair of legs positioned at the top, which further fragment the human form. The inclusion of the text 'Gallerie Moderner Meister' at the base adds a layer of irony, as the work itself is composed of the very refuse that traditional galleries of the time would have excluded.

Schwitters spent his later years in exile in Britain, and his work from this period often reflects the displacement and instability of the era. The materials used are not merely decorative; they are remnants of daily life, salvaged and recontextualised. The layering process creates a sense of depth, despite the flat nature of the paper components. This piece invites the viewer to consider the relationship between mass-produced imagery and the individual perspective.
