A striking example of Yves Klein's late-career experiments with fire, featuring intense blue pigment scorched onto cardboard.
This work belongs to the series of Fire-Color Paintings produced by Yves Klein during the final year of his life. Klein utilised a flame-thrower to scorch the surface of cardboard, creating a dialogue between the destructive force of fire and the application of pigment. The resulting marks are not traditional brushstrokes but rather the physical traces of combustion.
The composition features deep, saturated blue pigments that appear to bleed into the scorched, amber-toned ground. The vertical drips and charred edges suggest a process of rapid transformation. Klein sought to capture the energy of the elements, moving away from the limitations of the easel to engage with the material reality of the medium. The interaction between the intense blue and the warm, burnt hues of the support creates a visual tension that is characteristic of his later experiments.
By employing fire as a tool, Klein removed the direct intervention of the artist's hand in the traditional sense, allowing the heat to dictate the final form. This approach aligns with his broader interest in the immaterial and the cosmic. The work functions as a record of a performance, documenting the moment of contact between the flame and the surface. The stark contrast between the blue pigment and the scorched cardboard provides a sense of depth, despite the flatness of the support. This piece offers a direct encounter with the artist's radical methodology, where the process of creation is as visible as the finished object itself.
