A minimalist screenprint by Fred Sandback, featuring two precise vertical lines that explore the relationship between form and empty space.
Fred Sandback is known for his exploration of space through the use of simple, linear forms. This work, Untitled (FLS #3028), reflects his practice of using minimal visual information to define the boundaries of a two-dimensional plane. By placing two vertical, slightly offset lines of colour against a neutral background, Sandback invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the mark and the void. His work often avoids the physical weight of traditional sculpture, opting instead for a conceptual approach that relies on the viewer's perception of geometry and distance.
In this print, the precision of the lines creates a sense of tension. The slight variation in length and the parallel orientation suggest a movement or a shift in perspective. Sandback's approach to art-making was rooted in the idea that a line could occupy space without enclosing it. This philosophy is evident in his larger installations, which often utilised yarn to create three-dimensional volumes, and it translates here into a graphic format that retains that same sense of openness. The composition is stripped of extraneous detail, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the red pigment and the paper surface. This piece is a clear example of the artist's ability to create a sense of presence with minimal means, demonstrating how a few deliberate marks can alter the perception of a blank field. The work does not attempt to represent an external subject, but rather exists as an object of contemplation in its own right, inviting a quiet engagement with the fundamental elements of line and colour.
