A minimalist screenprint by Frederick Sandback, featuring precise linear forms set against a saturated blue rectangular field.
Frederick Sandback is recognised for his investigations into the nature of space and line. While he is best known for his three-dimensional installations using acrylic yarn to define architectural volumes, his two-dimensional works on paper provide a direct insight into his conceptual process. This print, Untitled (FLS #3043), features a precise, rectangular block of saturated blue ink set against a neutral paper ground. Within this field, thin, white linear elements create a sense of depth and spatial tension.
Sandback’s approach to art is characterised by a reduction of form. He avoids the use of mass or volume in the traditional sense, preferring instead to suggest presence through minimal means. The lines in this composition do not describe an object, but rather suggest a relationship between the viewer and the surrounding environment. The contrast between the solid blue rectangle and the delicate, negative-space lines creates a dialogue between presence and absence. This work reflects the artist's interest in how simple geometric configurations can alter the perception of a flat surface.
By stripping away extraneous detail, Sandback invites the viewer to focus on the fundamental properties of the medium. The print functions as a study in balance and proportion. The placement of the lines within the blue field is deliberate, creating a sense of equilibrium that is both quiet and precise. This piece is an example of the artist's ability to create a sense of architectural scale within the confines of a printed page. It is a work that rewards sustained observation, as the interaction between the colour field and the linear elements shifts depending on the distance from which it is viewed.
