A symbolic self-portrait by Frida Kahlo from 1932, this ink drawing reflects her personal experiences with miscarriage, rendered with meticulous detail and surrealist elements.
This ink drawing by Frida Kahlo, created in 1932, presents a symbolic self-portrait reflecting her personal experiences with miscarriage. The composition is divided into distinct sections, each laden with symbolic meaning. Kahlo depicts herself standing centrally, bisected into two halves: one side representing fertility, the other, loss. A foetus is visible within her torso, connected by a cord to a small, detached figure of a child below. To the left, a series of cellular forms suggests the stages of embryonic development, while on the right, a palette and a crying moon allude to her artistic expression and emotional state. The lower portion of the drawing features plants emerging from the earth, perhaps symbolising life and growth, juxtaposed with elements that suggest pain and suffering. The entire scene is rendered with meticulous detail in ink, with fine lines and stippling creating a textured effect. Kahlo's work often explored themes of identity, the human body, and personal trauma. This drawing is a raw and unflinching representation of her physical and emotional pain, rendered with a surrealist sensibility.
