A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, depicting a group of figures in a domestic interior setting.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicts a domestic scene featuring a group of figures arranged within a structured interior space. Kunisada, a prolific designer of the Utagawa school, produced a vast body of work during the late Edo period. His output often focused on the lives of actors, courtesans, and the fashionable urbanites of Edo, now Tokyo.
The composition is divided into three panels, a common format for ukiyo-e prints of this era. The figures are positioned around a low table, with architectural elements such as sliding screens and patterned textiles creating a sense of depth. The artist employs a clear, linear style to define the contours of the garments and the facial features of the subjects. The use of colour is deliberate, with a palette dominated by deep blues, soft pinks, and muted earth tones, which balance the decorative patterns found on the kimonos and the surrounding screens.
Kunisada was known for his technical proficiency in the ukiyo-e medium. His work often captured the specific fashions and social customs of his time. In this print, the attention to detail in the textile patterns and the varied postures of the individuals suggests a narrative or theatrical context, typical of the genre. The print demonstrates the collaborative nature of the woodblock process, where the artist's design was translated into a series of carved blocks by skilled artisans. The result is a balanced arrangement that reflects the aesthetic preferences of the mid-nineteenth century in Japan, prioritising clear outlines and a harmonious distribution of figures across the pictorial plane.
