Description
A minimalist grid relief by Dutch artist Jan Schoonhoven, focusing on the interplay of light, shadow, and geometric repetition.
Jan Schoonhoven was a central figure in the Dutch Nul group, an artistic collective that sought to strip art of personal expression and emotional content. This work is a characteristic example of his relief series, where he utilised humble materials such as cardboard, paper, and white paint to construct precise, geometric structures. By applying layers of white acrylic over a grid of cardboard strips, Schoonhoven created a surface that relies entirely on the interplay of light and shadow. The grid is a recurring motif in his practice, representing a rejection of traditional composition in favour of serial repetition. The physical depth of the relief allows the ambient light in a room to define the work, as the raised edges of the cardboard squares cast subtle, shifting shadows across the surface. This process transforms the two-dimensional plane into a tactile, architectural object. The monochromatic white finish serves to neutralise the surface, ensuring that the viewer focuses on the rhythm of the repeated forms rather than the artist's hand or individual style. Schoonhoven worked as a civil servant for the Dutch postal service for much of his life, and he often credited the repetitive nature of his daily administrative tasks with influencing his artistic methodology. His approach was methodical, disciplined, and focused on the objective qualities of form and space. By removing colour and narrative, he invited a meditative engagement with the physical properties of the materials. This print captures the precise geometry and the subtle tonal variations of the original relief, offering a clean, structured aesthetic suitable for contemporary interiors. It is an exercise in restraint, demonstrating how a simple, repeated unit can generate a complex visual experience through the manipulation of light and shadow.
