A fine art print of a 12th-century Goryeo dynasty celadon jar, featuring a pale green glaze and minimalist lug handles.
This print depicts a Goryeo dynasty jar, a form of stoneware produced on the Korean peninsula during the 12th century. The vessel features a globular body that tapers toward a short, upright neck, balanced by a modest foot ring. Small, scroll-shaped lug handles are positioned symmetrically around the shoulder, providing both a functional element and a subtle decorative accent. The surface is covered in a characteristic celadon glaze, which displays a pale, greenish-grey hue. This glaze is known for its translucency and depth, often mimicking the appearance of jade.
The aesthetic of this period prioritised restraint and form over elaborate surface ornamentation. The potter focused on the balance between the volume of the body and the verticality of the neck. The glaze application appears even, with minor variations in tone that suggest the firing process within a wood-burning kiln. Such vessels were often used for storing liquids or grains, though their refined finish suggests they held a place in domestic or ritual settings. The simplicity of the design reflects the technical mastery of Goryeo ceramicists, who achieved high-fired stoneware through precise control of kiln temperatures and atmospheric conditions.
In this reproduction, the focus remains on the silhouette and the subtle play of light across the curved surface. The neutral background ensures that the viewer observes the specific proportions and the soft, muted colouration of the original glaze. This piece offers a view into the historical development of East Asian ceramics, where the pursuit of purity in form and colour defined the output of the era. The absence of complex patterns allows the viewer to appreciate the structural integrity of the vessel, which remains a classic example of medieval Korean craftsmanship.
