A monochrome lithograph by Sam Francis featuring a central cluster of ink-like splatters and drips against a stark white background.
This lithograph by Sam Francis, catalogued as L.213 or SF.240, demonstrates the artist's engagement with the physical properties of ink and the spatial dynamics of the page. Francis, a figure associated with the second generation of American Abstract Expressionists, developed a visual language defined by the interplay between empty space and gestural mark-making. In this work, the composition is anchored by a central cluster of dark, ink-like splatters and drips that suggest a sense of gravity and movement. The surrounding area remains largely unadorned, allowing the white of the paper to function as an active element rather than a passive background.
The marks themselves vary in density and scale, ranging from fine, spray-like droplets to heavier, vertical drips that imply the influence of gravity on the original medium. Francis often explored the relationship between light and colour, yet here he restricts his palette to monochrome, focusing the viewer's attention on the rhythm of the application. The sparse, scattered nature of the peripheral marks creates a sense of expansion, as if the central form is dispersing across the surface. This approach reflects his interest in the spontaneity of the creative act and the controlled application of chance. By stripping away representational imagery, the work invites an examination of the material qualities of the printmaking process itself. The balance between the concentrated core and the lighter, more diffuse elements provides a structure that is both chaotic and deliberate. This piece is representative of his later graphic work, where he continued to refine his mastery of negative space and the expressive potential of the printed line.
