A refined shunga woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai, depicting a couple in a domestic interior with characteristic Edo-period detail.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai belongs to the shunga genre, a category of Japanese art depicting erotic subjects. Koryūsai was a samurai who transitioned into a professional artist, eventually becoming a prolific designer of ukiyo-e prints. His work often features refined compositions and a focus on the domestic lives of the urban population during the Edo period.
The scene depicts a couple within a private interior space. The composition employs the characteristic flat perspective of the period, allowing the viewer to observe the domestic details, such as the tiered shelving unit containing ceramics and seasonal decorations. The artist uses a muted palette, relying on subtle variations of ochre, green, and soft terracotta to define the space. The figures are rendered with clean, precise lines, typical of the nishiki-e (brocade print) technique that allowed for multiple colours to be applied to a single sheet.
Koryūsai was known for his technical skill in managing the balance between the human figures and their surroundings. The patterned textiles of the clothing and the geometric screen in the background provide a visual rhythm that anchors the figures. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to integrate narrative elements with decorative design. The inclusion of calligraphy within the image area is a standard feature of the period, often providing context or poetic commentary on the scene. As a practitioner of the ukiyo-e style, Koryūsai captured the fleeting pleasures of the floating world, documenting the social customs and private moments of his contemporaries with a high degree of technical control.
